Liga Privada T52 Short Panetela

Box of 24

Ever since Drew Estate released the Liga Privada No. 9 line in 2007, the cult-like following of this range has only grown, to the point where Drew Estate issued a follow-up line, the T52 series, to try and satisfy demand. Whereas the original Liga Privada smokes made use of a private in-house blend that was finally released to the public after years of being held back for internal use, the T52 line is a stronger and more robust formulation that makes use of a stalk-cut, Connecticut-grown, Cuban-seed Habano wrapper.

As Jonathan Drew explains it, the company came across a barnful of this stalk-cut tobacco by accident, and it wasn’t cheap to buy. Normally, tobacco leaves are primed — that is, they’re taken off the plants leaf by leaf and processed. But with stalk-cut tobacco, the leaves are left intact on their stalks, which are cut from the plants and left to dry in the sun before being hung in a warehouse prior to aging. During this time, the nutrients from the stalks still feed into the leaves, which are endowed with an overall bolder, richer, earthier quality, resulting in tobacco that’s particularly prized by certain cigar makers in the industry.

Drew Estate decided to buy the entire lot of this tobacco to make the T52 series, and the rest was history. Inside, as in the No. 9 series, there are Nicaraguan and Honduran long-filler leaves from seven individual tobacco farms and a Brazilian Mata Fina binder.

At Drew Estate’s sprawling Gran Fabrica cigar factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, only the most veteran tercedors (rollers) are allowed to make T52 sticks, in low daily quantities. These ultra-premium cigars are then sold exclusively through select retail outlets.

This vitola of the T52 series, the Short Panatela, is a relatively new addition to the line, having been released in 2018. Possessing immaculate construction, a superb draw and an even burn, it’s full-bodied, with medium-to-full-strength. Flavors that can be detected include leather, cocoa, spices and strong tobacco.

This is a potent stick that could be just right for a morning or early afternoon smoke, when you want a cigar that will burn for under an hour. The T52s are difficult to come by, so if you see that the Short Panatelas are in stock, don’t hesitate to get your order in.
